(29 ene. 1761, Ginebra, Suiza–12 ago. 1849, Astoria, N.Y., EE.UU.).
Ministro de hacienda estadounidense (1801–14). A los 19 años emigró a Pensilvania, donde prosperó en los negocios y finanzas. Elegido miembro de la Cámara de Representantes en 1795, inauguró el Comité de finanzas de la Cámara, precursor del poderoso Comité de medios y arbitrios. Como secretario del tesoro, redujo la deuda nacional en 23 millones de dólares. Se opuso a la guerra anglo-estadounidense y tomó parte en la negociación del tratado de Gante, en 1814. Luego de desempeñarse como representante diplomático en Francia (1816–23) y en Gran Bretaña, fue presidente del National Bank (
más tarde Gallatin Bank) en la ciudad de Nueva York (1831–39).
